Water’s Edge Women’s Wellness Center is an ambulatory care clinic that places empathy, dignity, and emotional well-being at the forefront. Located in Danvers, Massachusetts, near the serene marshland of the Waters River. The center offers a user-centered environment for adult women needing primary care, gynecology care, breast cancer screening, counseling, and diagnostic imaging. The design is rooted in the emotional journey of patients. By understanding the negative emotions one might experience in a healthcare setting, like fear or stress, and evoking more positive feelings; Bravery, Trust, Strength, Growth, and Healing. This concept drives the spatial experience, guiding users through spaces supportive of both medical and emotional well-being. The design utilizes intuitive way-finding, patient-focused zoning, and clear on-stage/off-stage circulation to reduce stress and maximize clarity.

Biophilic design and organic materials, like light wood-like flooring, ribbed wall panels, soft acoustic felt, pale green, blue, blush, and terracotta tones. Designed to evoke tranquility, warmth, and a connection to the local landscape. Carefully articulated lighting approaches such as cove lighting, large soffits, and glazed openings provide patients with a sense of clarity and comfort. Waiting areas feature cozy seating, a range of privacy options, and views of the outdoors. Exam rooms are entered discreetly and paired with counseling rooms. This zone features a symbolic chain-link floor inserts represent the strength and interrelated nature of women’s health experiences. Water’s Edge develops a new ideal for healthcare design, focusing on human centered design, emotional intelligence and informed design. It is not just a clinic but an environment that was designed to feel like a healing sanctuary. It is here that women are greeted, heard, and nurtured at every step along the journey.
