This project aims to address the growing issue of food waste and food insecurity through the creation of an innovative hub that educates the community and facilitates the repurposing of surplus food. The proposed design seeks to blend functionality, creativity, education, social interaction, connection and nourishment all while promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness. The intent of the space is to serve as a future model of efficiency that can be adapted into all food industry spaces and help create positive change revolving around food. An extensive literature review, research on related architectural precedent studies, site visits and interviews were conducted to explore the interconnectedness of food waste, sustainability, and food insecurity to ensure the project creates a lasting impact. The design will need to bridge gaps including a lack of public outreach, a lack of action and a lack of preexisting design implementation, by not only providing for people’s basic needs but also transforming how we engage with our resources, environment and others. This project aims to become a powerful project of change.

—It’s so interesting to design with the intent of not only making a better environment, but to actively be practicing the art of a better functioning society for all to enjoy. I feel as if society often forgets the impacts of our actions and how it may not be directly affecting ourselves, but can be hurting another. Design can be an important tool that helps unveil these truths needed to have a better shared future.
