Together in the Tide Pediatric Inpatient Hospital Room

“Together in the Tide” is a pediatric inpatient room concept designed for Charlton Memorial Hospital, which currently lacks a dedicated pediatric care unit. The goal is to create a space where child patients feel safe and comforted, and where families and staff alike feel supported and connected. Rooted in the concept of a wave, the design symbolizes flow, resilience, and unity reflecting the dynamic relationships between caregivers, patients, and families. Staff represent the deep, steady currents; patients, the small yet powerful ripples; and families, the grounding shoreline. These interconnected roles mirror Charltons own logo and values. One Major design challenge was optimizing a compact space to meet varied needs which include privacy, shared functionality, and emotional comfort without compromising accessibility or usability. Solutions include flexible room zoning, calming palettes, and materials that support health. The project incorporates several LEED and WELL strategies which include ventilation, sustainable and low VOC materials, strategic lighting, and mental wellness zones. These choices not only enhance health outcomes but also demonstrate a commitment to all those involved and sustainability. “Together in the Tide” transforms a clinical setting into a nurturing, multi functional environment, one where healing happens through collaboration, compassion, and thoughtful design.
