Next Step Sport Medicine is a specialty facility focused on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries related to sports and exercise, as well as the improvement of athletic performance. Their new care center is fully equipped with scanning equipment, surgical rooms, and state-of-the-art physical therapy spaces to treat injuries to bones, muscles, tendons, and joints as well as head and spinal injuries. Next Step emphasizes mental health as a vital part of the recovery and treatment process, acknowledging that many of their clients are athletes, and an injury keeping them away from their regular sports and activities can often take a toll on their mental health.

The concept “track to recovery” promotes an understanding that mental health and recovery follow a cycle that may not feel linear or clear at the time, but with each step ultimately contributes to progress and growth. Through clear circulation and wayfinding that encourages patients to leave their rooms and remain active, alongside large spans of windows that provide greater access to daylight and nature, a better mental experience is created for the users of the space.

While WELL building standards are not typically applied to a healthcare setting, many of their concepts were thoughtfully integrated into the design of the facility – such as healthy dining options –  alongside sustainability efforts, universal design strategies and healthcare standards. In turn, all of Next Step’s users – whether that is healthcare workers, patients, or support humans – are sure to get a unique, equitable experience within the facility.
