Ambulatory Oncology Center

Applying the audial and visual properties of the movement of water to create a healing atmosphere for the patients who visit. The center consists of two oncology clinics within the on-stage/off-stage model, one dedicated to medication-based treatments and the second for radiation-based treatments. The facility also features a modular infusion bay on the western façade and lab testing towards the south. The oncology center applies both abstract motifs of water movements, from rainfall to calming rivers, as well as water sounds to calm the incoming patients before their treatments. The audial and visual cues provoke the human body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which has been proven to lower the body’s blood rate, blood pressure, lessen the amount of pain and stress felt. As the patient navigates the center the type of water motifs changes, acting as a sound barrier in high confidentiality areas, a means of wayfinding and a distraction to ease the stress of patients seeking treatment. The material choices reflect a modern healthcare experience with ecofriendly decisions. The flooring throughout the space are various colors of linoleums from Tarkett, which are easily sterilized and have a much smaller carbon footprint than an LVT. The space features a recurrence of wooden slats that bring the outside nature in for a touch of biophilia to improve the patient experience. The center is designed to aid in the patients’ healing process through improving the wellness which inhabits their environment.
